In 1951, two classes walked onto fresh ground at Morningside High School. They were the first students of this brand-new school in Inglewood, California. The incoming 9th graders came from local junior high schools. A group of 10th graders transferred from Inglewood High School. Some teachers, including the first principal A. John Waldmann, also made the move. Morningside High School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Its motto, “Knowledge is Power,” reflected the school’s dedication to academic excellence. Morningside High is part of the Inglewood Unified School District. It’s the second largest high school in the city, right after Inglewood High. The school has seen its share of ups and downs. Around 2005, over 1,600 students roamed the halls. By 2024, enrollment had dropped to 483. Despite these challenges, Morningside High boasts a rich history, both academically and athletically. Its athletic teams, the Monarchs, are fierce competitors, especially in basketball and football. Morningside High has even made its way into popular culture. The 1993 documentary “Hardwood Dreams,” narrated by Wesley Snipes, followed five Morningside seniors during their final basketball season. The sequel, “Hardwood Dreams: Ten Years Later,” also narrated by Snipes, caught up with the players a decade later. Even Garth Brooks got in on the action, creating the fictional Morningside High student and musician Chris Gaines for a proposed movie. The school’s alumni list is impressive, featuring athletes like Lisa Leslie and Elden Campbell, actress Vicki Lawrence, and politician Jackie Goldberg. Morningside High has also been home to notable faculty, including basketball coach Jim Harrick and actress Phyllis Love. Located near SoFi Stadium and the Kia Forum, the school is in a dynamic area with plenty of opportunities for students to engage with the community.
