“A spirit-filled ministry in Detroit.” That’s how Morning View Baptist Church is often described. Founded on April 4 1949 Morning View Baptist Church has deep roots. It started with 152 dedicated Southern Baptists. They met at Capitol Heights Elementary School.
Morning View Baptist Church was established during a unique time. The United States was changing after World War II. Technology was advancing. Church attendance was also on the rise.
In 1949 the threat of communism loomed large. Yet, American churches experienced a revival. People sought community and faith. Morning View Baptist Church became part of that movement. Religious leaders were highly respected in society.
Soon after its founding Morning View Baptist Church acquired property. It was located at the corner of Calhoun Road and Pelzer Avenue. A groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 12 1950. Construction began for a new church building.
Reverend S. Louis Armstrong became the pastor on May 25 1949. He guided the church through its early years. In December the “old” North wing was completed. The first service was held on Christmas Eve.
God blessed Morning View Baptist Church with growth. In February 1955 the South wing was added. It housed Sunday School Departments and a worship auditorium.
Morning View Baptist Church is community conscious. It seeks to help people discover God’s will. The church emphasizes the importance of God’s word. Preaching is expositional going through books of the Bible.
