Wow Look at the size of this tree. This is the magnificent Moreton Bay Fig tree in Balboa Park. It’s a real giant isn’t it?
Planted in 1914 this iconic tree has been standing tall for over a century. It was actually a sapling when it arrived. It was part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Today it’s one of the largest trees in California.
In 1996 this amazing Moreton Bay Fig tree was measured. It stood 78 feet tall. Its branches spread out over 123 feet. The trunk itself is 16 feet in diameter. That’s almost as wide as a small car. Can you imagine? It continues to grow about one foot each year. That’s incredible.
Sadly heavy foot traffic caused some damage to the tree. The roots were being hurt by the crowds. So in 1989 the area beneath it was fenced off. This helped protect the Moreton Bay Fig tree. It allowed the tree to recover and thrive.
There’s a viewing platform now. You can get a close up look at this amazing tree. The Moreton Bay Fig tree even has aerial roots. These are characteristic of fig trees. They would help support the tree’s branches in the wild. It’s truly a sight to behold. A truly stunning tree.
The Moreton Bay Fig tree is also in contention for the state championship. It’s competing with two other Moreton Bay Fig trees. One’s in Santa Barbara the other’s in Glendora. It’s a very popular spot for photos. It’s especially beautiful at night during December Nights. It becomes a magical meeting place. The Moreton Bay Fig tree is a true treasure of Balboa Park. A living legend.
