During World War II 80 percent of Mooswald was destroyed. Imagine the devastation. Mooswald a district in Freiburg’s western reaches is more than just a residential area. It’s a testament to resilience and community spirit. In 1932 Freiburg’s city council approved a plan. The plan was to build a new suburb. It was built on the city’s then western edge. They were purchased as leasehold estates. After 1933 the project continued under the Nazi regime. It was called the National Socialist Settlement Works. A settler’s union was even formed in 1934. Settlers grew potatoes and vegetables. They also kept small animals. The Catholic Church Holy Family was built in 1938. Reconstruction began in 1945. It was a time of rebuilding using simple resources. A train station Im Wolfswinkel was created in 1948. It has since closed. In 1952 the Mooswald Civic Association was founded. The city created a landfill near Wolfswinkel. An emergency Evangelical St Mark’s Church was built in 1953. The Mooswald school a primary school opened in 1955-56. A community center was also completed. The preservation of the western Mooswald forest remained a concern. This was because of the city’s westward expansion. Mooswald boasts two churches Holy Family and St Mark’s. Freiburg’s Jewish cemetery is also located there. Several schools stand in Mooswald including the Paul Hindemith primary school and the Wentzinger schools. The Mooswaldschule is now a school for special educational needs. The Fritz Hüttinger Haus is a meeting place. It’s run by the Mooswald civic association. The building hosts cultural events and language classes. It’s also a youth center.
