Lost in the embrace of the Elbe’s gentle currents Moorwerder whispers tales of resilience. Standing before this former island now part of Wilhelmsburg we journey back in time. Moorwerder a name echoing the watery past a Werder a river island in the Elbe’s embrace. Established long ago its story intertwines with Hamburg’s rise. Unlike much of Wilhelmsburg Moorwerder belonged to Hamburg since the late Middle Ages. It was a strategic point. In 1395 the Holstein counts pawned their rights over Moorwerder to Hamburg’s council. This acquisition gave Hamburg control of the Elbe’s division into the Norderelbe and Süderelbe. They built the Bunte Haus a stronghold to regulate shipping and enforce their staple right. Imagine ships sailing by this very spot. The Bunte Haus controlled their access to the Süderelbe.

Moorwerder’s connection to Wilhelmsburg evolved over time. Before 1880 Moorwerder was isolated. Floods or ice could cut it off completely. A bridge changed that. Moorwerder then joined Wilhelmsburg. The 1962 storm surge reshaped Moorwerder again. The existing separate dike was integrated into Wilhelmsburg’s new flood protection system. The old dike’s path is still visible today in street names.
