Founded in 1908 by members of the Colombo Grand Mosque in Pettah, the club was a unique place for the Moorish community to gather, socialize, and of course, play cricket.
The Moors Sports Club was not just about cricket, though. It quickly became recognized for its efforts to popularize sports in the area. From tennis to billiards, the club offered a range of activities for people of all ages, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Over the years, the club has witnessed incredible changes. In 1936, a grand clubhouse was constructed. It was a testament to the club’s growth and influence. The club’s dedication to excellence paved the way for it to become a first-class club in 1921. It wasn’t long before a constant stream of young cricketers joined, reinforcing the club’s place in the region’s sporting landscape. The Moors Sports Club made history in 1983 when it was awarded test status.
However, the true turning point for the club came in the 2002-2003 season when they won their first ever Premier Trophy. After reaching a nail-biting final against the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, the Moors triumphed, proving their unwavering determination. Nandika Ranjith was chosen as the man of the match for his incredible bowling performance, and it was Chandika Hathurusingha who received the best player of the tournament award. The Moors Sports Club continues to nurture young cricketers, providing them with a platform to showcase their talent. It’s a place where passion for the game intersects with a deep sense of community, creating a legacy that echoes through the streets of Colombo.
