“Admire the shimmering reflections dancing on the lake,” beckons an old fisherman’s voice. He gestures towards the majestic Sun and Moon Pagodas. These pagodas form the centrepiece of the scene before us. We are here at the Moon viewing pavillion. The Sun and Moon Pagodas stand as an iconic symbol of Guilin City.
These twin marvels embody the fusion of philosophical thoughts. These thoughts have shaped Chinese civilization for centuries. The Sun Pagoda shines with golden hues. It holds the title of the world’s tallest bronze pagoda. It uniquely features an internal elevator. This elevator allows visitors an effortless ascent. From the top there are panoramic views of Guilin’s picturesque landscape.
Adjacent to it stands the Moon Pagoda. It has a silver color. Together they complete the yin and yang balance. The twin structures symbolize this balance. The Sun Pagoda reaches a height of 41 meters. That’s spanning nine stories. It is entirely adorned with pure copper. 350 tons of the material was consumed. Every element of the Sun Pagoda is embellished with copper reliefs. This includes the eaves, tiles, cornices, brackets, decorative carvings, doors, windows, pillars, and even the flooring. This sets three world records. These are the tallest copper pagoda, the tallest copper building, and the tallest pagoda situated in water.
The Moon Pagoda stands at 35 meters. It has seven stories. It is made of glazed tiles. Each level features intricately carved and painted doors and windows. Each symbolizes different traditional Chinese themes. A 10-meter-long underwater tunnel connects the Moon Pagoda to the Sun Pagoda. This arched glass tunnel offers a mesmerizing view. See koi, goldfish, flower carp, and grass carp swimming gracefully around.
The Sun and Moon Pagodas Cultural Park beautifully integrates cultures. These are the cultures of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The park houses the largest bronze statues in Guilin. They are of Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, Confucius, and Laozi. The Moon Pagoda features China’s first inland tantric “Mani Wheel”. Its underground palace showcases Guangxi’s first version of the “Medicine Buddha and Twelve Heavenly Generals” mural relief. The first floor of the Moon Pagoda contains a Taiji drum. The first floor of the Sun Pagoda features a blessing bell. The Moon Pagoda’s small square and first floor exhibit Chinese stone steles. These include the “Bamboo Leaf Stele,” “Shakyamuni Footprint Stele,” “Image Stele,” “Form Character Stele,” and “Millennium Longevity Stele.”
From the top of the pagodas, visitors are treated to a panoramic view. It encompasses serene lakes and lush mountains. To the south lies Shanhu Lake Square. It is designed for cultural activities. To the east is Zhi Yin Tai. To the north is the boarding point for the Four Lakes Cruise at Riyue Bay. To the west, the diverse architectural styles blend seamlessly. See Yang Bridge, Glass Bridge, Beidou Bridge, and the Twin Bridges of Ancient Banyan Trees.
Tourists are strongly recommended to visit the Sun and Moon Pagodas at night. The golden and silver lights from the Sun and Moon Pagoda will shine on the lake and you. The colors from above the water and the reflection of color underwater may dazzle you.
The Sun and Moon Pagodas stand next to each other. They reflect the beauty of each other. A visit to the Moon viewing pavillion offers an unforgettable glimpse into China’s illustrious past. It also offers its enduring cultural legacy. As the moonlight kisses the pagodas, remember the harmonious blend of history and artistry. These landmarks will forever be etched in your memory.
