A shiver runs down your spine. The Monumentul Eroilor Patriei stands before you. Its imposing bronze figures seem to watch you.
This monument is more than just a statue. It is a tribute to Romanian soldiers who fell in World War II. It stands tall on its six-meter-high pedestal. This pedestal is made of reinforced concrete. It is faced with Moneasa marble. The statue itself is nine meters tall.
The three bronze soldiers represent different branches of the army: infantry navy and aviation. The infantryman holds a branch of oak. This symbolizes victory. The group was cast in bronze in 1958 at the Combinatul Fondului Plastic in Bucharest. Vasile V. Rășcanu led the team.
Notice the inscription on the pedestal. It reads Glory to the Romanian soldiers. It continues. It calls them heirs of heroic traditions. It praises them as fearless fighters. It notes their fight against fascism. It proclaims their struggle for the freedom and independence of the fatherland.
On either side of the Monumentul Eroilor Patriei are large bas-reliefs. They depict key moments in Romanian history. They cover a total area of 154 square meters. The bas-reliefs start with the Roman conquest of Dacia. They conclude with the fight of Romanian soldiers in World War II.
The Monumentul Eroilor Patriei was inaugurated on August 17 1957. It stands in front of the National Defence University Carol I. It is the work of a team of Romanian sculptors. This team included Colonel Marius Butunoiu Zoe Băicoianu Ion Dămăceanu and Theodor N. Ionescu. They were from the Army’s Studio of Plastic Arts.
Before the statue’s completion a 1:1 plaster model stood in its place. This was painted to look like bronze. Temporary panels suggested the future bas-reliefs. These were not yet finished.
