“For democracy and the freedom of the people” reads the inscription. This phrase echoes across time as we stand before the Monumentul Eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial War memorial.

This monument stands as a solemn reminder of sacrifice. It honors those who fell in the First World War. The Monumentul Eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial is also known as “Statuia din Sălăjan”.

Look closely and you’ll see a bronze soldier. He is forever captured in a dynamic pose of attack. The sculptor Spiridon Georgescu created this work. The monument was erected in 1932. Constantin M. Brânzoi, the mayor of Dudești-Cioplea, championed its construction.

The base features a cubic socle of concrete clad in marble. Atop this sits a smaller, parallelepiped socle, also marble-clad. A bronze bas-relief adorns the front. It depicts a scene of intense hand-to-hand combat. Plaques on the other three sides list names. These are the names of heroes. They fell for democracy and freedom.

Originally, the monument honored Orthodox heroes from Dudești. A separate, smaller monument was erected for Catholic heroes from Cioplea. It stands in the Catholic cemetery. The Monumentul Eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial is located at the intersection of Bulevardul Theodor Pallady and Bulevardul Nicolae Grigorescu.

Consider the weight of history embedded in this place. The monument is a reminder of the cost of freedom. The Monumentul Eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial stands as a testament to their bravery.
