High above Aviators’ Square a bronze man soars. His wings outstretched he seems to defy gravity. This is Monumentul Eroilor Aerului the Monument to the Heroes of the Air.

It stands tall a testament to Romanian pilots who perished in the skies. Built between 1930 and 1935 it’s more than just a statue. It’s a tribute to bravery sacrifice and skill.

The monument is 20 meters high. A magnificent structure of bronze and stone. At its heart is a 15-meter obelisk. Atop this obelisk sits the 5-meter figure of the flying man. Around the base are three more figures each in a different stage of flight.

Notice the details. The aviator’s insignia helmets and equipment are sculpted onto the pedestal. Engraved plaques list the names of those who gave their lives. These men died in training performing feats of daring or fighting in World War I. The first name is Gheorghe Caranda. The last is Sava Rotaru. After the monument’s dedication 99 more names were added.

The design competition was fierce. Twenty designs were submitted. Lidia Kotzebue’s design won. She used Joe Louis the boxer as a model for the aviator’s body. The head was inspired by a photograph of a famous aviator.

Imagine the unveiling in 1935. Leading officials ministers and representatives of the Air Ministry were present. Speeches were given. A military parade followed. Military honors were paid to the pilots named on the monument.

In 1981 a miniature copy of the monument traveled into space. It accompanied cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu. After the fall of Communism the cross of the Order of Aeronautical Virtue was restored to its place above the dedication.

Each Aviators’ Day wreaths and flowers are placed before the monument. It’s a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by these brave individuals. Look closely. Feel the history here. This is more than a monument. It is a legacy.
