“Scouting spirit forever enshrined.” Does that resonate with you as you stand before the Monumento Scout in Milan? This monument is a tribute to the Scouting and Guiding movement. It is a testament to its values of loyalty, service, and outdoor adventure.

The Monumento Scout embodies a rich history. Scouting in Italy began around 1910. English gentlemen influenced by Robert Baden-Powell met with Italian educators. Teacher Remo Molinari and Francis Vane founded the Ragazzi Esploratori Italiani in 1910. King Vittorio Emanuele III’s presence gave publicity to the initiative.

Another meeting in 1910 involved James Richardson Spensley and Mario Mazza. Mazza integrated his Juventus Juvat movement into Scouting. Vane considered these initiatives the Italian section of the British Boy Scouts. The Corpo Nazionale Giovani Esploratori ed Esploratrici Italiani was founded in 1912. This is why 1912 is often listed as the official birthdate of Scouting in Italy.

The Associazione Scouts Cattolici Italiani was founded in 1916. In 1943, its female counterpart, the Associazione Guide Italiane, was launched. The two merged in 1974, forming the Associazione Guide e Scouts Cattolici Italiani. Some leaders disagreed with the merger. They formed the Associazione Italiana Guide e Scouts d’Europa Cattolici in 1976.

Italy was a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922. After suspension during the Fascist regime, it was readmitted in 1946. Since 1986, AGESCI and CNGEI are associated within the Italian Scout Federation.

Scouting and Guiding in Italy now include over 225,000 members. Next to Germany, France and Russia, Italy is the country with the most fragmented Scout movement. The Associazione Guide e Scouts Cattolici Italiani comprises over 80% of the country’s Scouts and Guides. More than 90% of the Italian Scout movement is Catholic.

As you reflect on the Monumento Scout, consider the impact of Scouting in Italy. It fosters youth development, community service, and international understanding. It also promotes values of honesty and respect. These associations shape character and build future leaders. The movement has a strong Catholic influence, but welcomes everyone.

Notice the symbolism in the Monumento Scout. It represents adventure. It signifies the commitment to helping others. The values of Scouting are important. The movement began with the first scout groups to today’s global organization. The Monumento Scout stands as a symbol. It signifies resilience. It embodies dedication.
