Ten years after the Great War’s end the Monumento in ricordo dei caduti della guerra del 1915-18 was inaugurated. This imposing monument stands as a solemn tribute to the Milanese soldiers who perished. It is a place of quiet reflection a sanctuary of remembrance.

The Monumento in ricordo dei caduti della guerra del 1915-18 was unveiled on November 4th 1928. The Duke of Aosta a distinguished commander during the war himself read the Victory Bulletin. A vast crowd mostly war veterans were present. The monument’s design is a collaboration. Architects Giovanni Muzio Alberto Alpago Novello Tomaso Buzzi Ottavio Cabiati and Gio Ponti contributed their skills. The striking bronze statue of Saint Ambrose is the work of Adolfo Wildt.

Architect Mario Baccini designed a three-level underground structure. Ten thousand names of the fallen are inscribed in bronze. The remains of Milanese soldiers are interred in this sacred space.

The monument’s white Musso marble contrasts with the dark stone enclosure. Its design echoes the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio. The octagonal ambulatory leads to a mausoleum. The four main sides bear the symbols of the war years. Names of major battles fought are also listed. Soil from the battlefields rests in black stone urns.
