Gazing upon the Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português, one might feel a complex mix of emotions. This towering obelisk, crafted from granite and reaching almost ten meters high, stands as a stark reminder of Portugal’s colonial past. The Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português was originally created for the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition in 1934. It was designed by sculptors José Sousa Caldas and Alferes Alberto Ponce de Castro. The exhibition, held at the Crystal Palace, aimed to showcase Portugal’s colonial power and influence. The monument, positioned at the entrance to the gardens, served as a centerpiece.

The Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português depicts six figures at its base. These figures symbolize the key players in Portugal’s colonial efforts: the missionary, the soldier, the merchant, the doctor, the farmer, and a woman. The woman is depicted with bare breasts, a representation of fertility and the nurturing role assigned to women in the colonial narrative. The other figures represent the forces of religion, military might, commerce, science, and agriculture that drove the colonial project. Crowning the obelisk is the Portuguese coat of arms, a symbol of national identity and power projected onto the colonized territories.

The inscription at the base commemorates the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition, held from June 16th to September 30th, 1934. The exhibition, inspired by the Paris Colonial Exposition of 1931, aimed to recreate a living image of Portugal’s colonies, showcasing what were considered its “civilizational achievements.” This included the unsettling practice of “human zoos,” where people from the colonies were brought to Porto and exhibited. The Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português, therefore, stands not only as a monument to colonial endeavor but also to a deeply problematic period of human exploitation.

Interestingly, the Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português was dismantled in the early 1950s after debates about its aesthetics. It remained in storage for three decades before being re-erected in 1984 by then-mayor Paulo Vallada, himself a colonist. This act, during a period of post-colonial reckoning, raises questions about the ongoing legacy of colonialism and its impact on public spaces. More recently, the monument has been a site of protest, being defaced with graffiti. It has also served as a gathering point for the PNR, a far-right political party, highlighting the complexities and conflicting interpretations surrounding this monument and the history it embodies. The Monumento ao Esforço Colonizador Português continues to spark debate and provoke critical reflection on Portugal’s colonial past and its lingering presence in the urban landscape.
