This tranquil spot holds a tale of unexpected sorrow. Here at the Monumento all’Indiano, we remember a young life cut short thousands of miles from home. In 1870, a 20-year-old Indian prince, Rajaram Chhatrapati, arrived in Florence. He was journeying back from England after paying respects to Queen Victoria. Sadly, he fell ill and died here in Florence. The prince’s courtiers wished to honor him with a traditional Hindu cremation. This presented a challenge, as cremation was banned in Italy at the time. However, due to the intervention of the British Consul and special permission from Rome, the ceremony was allowed. It took place near this very spot, at the confluence of the Arno and Mugnone rivers.
The Monumento all’Indiano, a small domed structure, was erected in 1874 to commemorate Prince Rajaram. The monument features a bust of the prince and inscriptions in English, Italian, Hindi, and Punjabi. It serves as a poignant reminder of a young life lost too soon, a testament to cultural understanding and a unique chapter in the history of Florence.
