Imagine the roar of the ocean translated into bronze. That’s the essence of the Monumento ai Marinai d’Italia. It stands here in Milan a city far from any coast. This monument is a tribute to Italian sailors. These brave men lost their lives during the Second World War.

The Monumento ai Marinai d’Italia is in the Parco Vittorio Formentano. It is also known as the park of Largo Marinai d’Italia. The park itself has an interesting history. It was established in 1969 on the site of a former fruit and vegetable market. Before that it was an Austrian fort. This area witnessed clashes during the Cinque Giornate.

Francesco Somaini designed the Monumento ai Marinai d’Italia. He started working on it in 1965. A committee asked him to create a monument for the fallen sailors. Luigi Caccia Dominioni helped with the architectural aspects. The committee wanted to unveil it in 1967 during a national gathering of sailors.

Originally the sculpture was supposed to sit at the edge of a pool of water. A walkway would have allowed people to cross the garden. This would encourage daily interaction with the monument. The final design was scaled back. However the Monumento ai Marinai d’Italia still makes a powerful statement.

The monument is a vibrant piece of art. It shows Somaini’s transition between styles. The monument embodies a contemporary idea. It is not just an isolated object. It’s a living symbol within an expansive space. The monument stands as an open and dynamic form.

The fountain monument covers about 800 square meters. It features a circular basin. Graduated steps surround the basin. A metal walkway with pylons represents a pier. A bronze sculpture sits atop it all. It depicts a wave crest. Somaini himself described it as a female figure merging into winged victory on a breaking wave.

The Association Marinai d’Italia commissioned the monument. They wanted to honor a city without a sea. Milan had the first sailors association in 1912. The monument also remembers those who died during the Second World War. The association donated the monument to the city.

In 1967 Aldo Moro the President of the Council inaugurated the monument. A parade of sailors marched through Milan. They arrived at what would later be called Largo Marinai d’Italia. There they unveiled the Onda Vittoria.

The Monumento ai Marinai d’Italia embodies loss remembrance and artistic innovation. It serves as a poignant reminder. It connects Milan to the maritime history of Italy. The monument invites reflection on the sacrifices made by Italian sailors. The monument also represents Milan’s connection to the sea. Although Milan is inland it has a deep connection to naval history. The monument serves as a lasting tribute to their memory.
