Beneath the Milanese sky stands the Monumento ai Carabinieri. It is a tribute to the dedication of the Carabinieri. The sculpture stands in Piazza Armando Diaz. It is more than just steel. It embodies the spirit of service.
Luciano Minguzzi created this monument. He was a renowned Italian sculptor. Commissioned in 1972, it was revealed in 1981. Giovanni Spadolini was present. He was then President of the Milan City Council. Also present was Carabinieri General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa.
The Monumento ai Carabinieri is also called Monumento alla Fiamma dei Carabinieri. This translates to Monument to the Flame of Carabinieri. The flame is a core symbol. It’s a heraldic emblem on the Carabinieri’s caps. It represents loyalty, fidelity, ardor and honor.
Look closely. The sculpture depicts a grenade. It has the letters IR inscribed on it. This stands for Italian Republic. Thirteen curving flames emerge from it. These represent the core values of the Carabinieri.
Tragically, Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa’s story took a dark turn. He combatted terrorism in Lombardy. His main target was the Red Brigades. Later, he was appointed Prefect of Palermo. The Mafia ambushed and assassinated him. His wife and their driver also died. A plaque honors his memory. It was added to the base of the Monumento ai Carabinieri a year later.
The statue is approximately ten meters high. It weighs thirteen tons. The Monumento ai Carabinieri stands as a powerful symbol. It reminds us of the Carabinieri’s commitment. They protect and serve the Italian Republic.
In 2019, the monument received new lighting. The celebration marked the 205th anniversary. It was of the founding of the Carabinieri. Emanuela Piantadosi was given the honor. She pressed the switch for the new lights. Her father was a Carabinieri officer. He was killed in the line of duty.
