Hidden within Piazza del Sacrario, the Monumento ai Caduti di Pogliano War memorial stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice. The Monumento ai Caduti di Pogliano, inaugurated on October 10, 1920, was originally conceived by the survivors of the First World War. They wished to create a lasting tribute to their fallen comrades. The memorial’s location, in front of the intersection of Via Monsignor Paleari and Via Chaniac, was chosen because Piazza del Santuario was Pogliano’s only piazza at the time. Don Corti, the parish priest of Pogliano from 1900 to 1923, spearheaded the project. The entire community of Pogliano contributed to the cost of 19,300 Lire. This monument’s construction involved a collaboration of talented individuals. Gaetano Calcaterra, a painter from Cuggiono, designed the monument. Giovanni Pippi, a stonemason from Vittuone, worked the white granite of Alzo. The Grazie di Arti Minori firm from Milan added the bronze decorations. The Monumento ai Caduti di Pogliano initially bore the names of 45 fallen soldiers from World War I. Later, the names of 27 more from World War II were added. During a restoration in the 1990s, the original bronze lettering, susceptible to weathering, was replaced with more durable panels. The Monumento ai Caduti di Pogliano is more than just a list of names. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community that rallied together to honor its heroes. The white granite, sourced from Alzo, a hamlet near Lake Orta, adds to its grandeur. This granite, known for its high quality and rich rare earth content, ensures the monument’s longevity. The Monumento ai Caduti di Pogliano stands as a beacon of remembrance. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. The monument also carries a message of peace. It prompts reflection on the virtues of those who served and the importance of preventing future conflicts.
