How many monuments have been moved not once, not twice, but multiple times? Here at the Monumento agli Alpini in Milan, we encounter just such a story. This bronze sculpture, standing proudly in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, has seen more relocations than a traveling circus. The Monumento agli Alpini isn’t just a statue. It’s a tribute to the Italian Alpini, the elite mountain warfare troops. It’s a symbol of their courage, resilience, and dedication. The monument depicts a dramatic scene from the Italo-Turkish War, also known as the war in Libya. It shows Alpino Antonio Valsecchi of the 51st Company, “Edolo” Battalion, hurling a rock at his enemies. Out of ammunition during the siege of the “Ridotta Lombardia”, Valsecchi’s act of defiance became a symbol of Alpini resourcefulness. Originally intended for the courtyard of the Mainoni Barracks in Via Pagano, the Monumento agli Alpini began its journey there in 1915. It was a grand affair. The Alpini raised funds for its creation, and the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo even donated Candoglia marble for the base. The monument’s original inscription honored the 5th Alpini Regiment and their Libyan victories. However, the journey of the Monumento agli Alpini was far from over. In 1921, it followed the 5th Alpini Regiment to Bergamo. It remained there until 1926 when the regiment returned to Milan, and the monument followed. Then, in 1928, after an assassination attempt on King Vittorio Emanuele III, the monument was moved to Via Pagano, a more public location, to honor fallen Alpini. Its travels continued in 1948, when it was relocated to Piazzale Cadorna. It was rededicated to all fallen Alpini, a broader symbol of sacrifice. Finally, in 1963, the Monumento agli Alpini found its current home in Piazza Giovanni XXIII. The inscription was updated to “To the fallen Alpini of all wars”. It’s a sobering reminder of the cost of conflict, honored by a monument that has itself witnessed so much change. So, as you stand before the Monumento agli Alpini, remember that you are not just looking at a statue, but a piece of history that has traveled through time, carrying the spirit and sacrifice of the Alpini with it.
