Do you see General Joaquín Vara de Rey y Rubio raising his sword? This is the Monumento a Vara del Rey. It honors a local hero from Ibiza.

The Monumento a Vara del Rey stands proudly in the heart of Ibiza. It is only 100 metres from the port. Most residents pass by the statue every week. But not everyone knows his story.

Joaquín Vara de Rey y Rubio was born in Ibiza on August 14, 1841. He became a general. The general died fighting in the Battle of El Caney. This was during Cuba’s war for independence in 1898. He fought against the American army.

A Cuban journalist described his bravery. Vara de Rey saw his brother and cousin die beside him. Though terribly wounded, he kept rising. He encouraged his troops in the name of Spain.

The Spanish people donated to build this monument. They wanted to honor their hero. The monument was inaugurated in 1904. General’s relatives and King Alfonso XIII attended.

The Artillery Park of Barcelona ceded bronze for the statue. The inauguration was held a few days before the anniversary of his death. This was to avoid protests against war monuments. Other monuments honor him in Madrid and Barcelona.

Look around at the colonial-style buildings surrounding the Paseo de Vara de Rey. They add to the area’s charm. Notice the Hotel Montesol on the corner. It dates back to 1933. It is of neocolonial character. UNESCO declared it a Good of Cultural Interest. Cafe Montesol was a refuge for artists seeking inspiration.

Passeig de Vara de Rey was refurbished and pedestrianised in 2017. Take a walk and visit artisan shops. Relax at the terraces of nearby restaurants. The Montesol Hotel witnessed historical meetings. Intellectuals and artists met here. It remains a trendy social spot and legendary hotel.

Throughout the year, the Paseo de Vara de Rey hosts many events. Christmas concerts and jumble sales take place here. There are also handicraft exhibitions and book fairs.

Until recently, a clock stood here. Locals used it as a meeting point. The remodeling replaced it with a solar clock shaped like a metallic tree.

The Monumento a Vara de Rey and its surroundings offer a glimpse into Ibiza’s soul. It blends history, culture and modern life. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry. Remember the hero who defended his homeland.
