“Trilobites & Arte” – these words may seem a bit odd at first, but they represent a pivotal moment for the small town of Arouca in Portugal. The “Monumento à Trilobite,” a striking installation located right in front of us, embodies this change. The monument itself is a simple but striking sculpture. Two massive slabs of slate from Canelas, the very place where these remarkable trilobites were found, form the base. Perched on top are metallic replicas of trilobites, their segmented bodies frozen in time. These ancient creatures, which roamed the Earth half a billion years ago, are now icons for Arouca. And what is most impressive is the size of these trilobites found here. While trilobite fossils are often small and delicate, the ones found in the Arouca region were enormous.
