Doesn’t this Monumento a los Niños Héroes in Cancún evoke a sense of patriotic pride? This monument stands in the hotel zone. It’s on Kukulcán Boulevard in the Jardín de las Artes. Here, among art, stands a tribute to young heroes.

The Monumento a los Niños Héroes honors six Mexican teenage military cadets. They died defending Mexico City’s Chapultepec Castle. This battle occurred during the Mexican-American War in 1847. The Niños Héroes are remembered every September 13. This is a national holiday.

These cadets fought bravely against invading U.S. forces. Chapultepec Castle was then a military academy. Mexican troops defended it under Nicolás Bravo. The cadets numbered from 47 to a few hundred. They were greatly outnumbered. They fought General Scott’s troops for about two hours. General Bravo ordered a retreat. But six cadets refused. They fought to the death.

Legend says Juan Escutia was the last. He leapt from Chapultepec Castle. He wrapped himself in the Mexican flag. This prevented the enemy from capturing it.

One U.S. officer said “about a hundred” cadets were taken prisoner. They were between 10 and 16 years old.

The Niños Héroes legacy teaches determination and unity. Challenges should be faced head-on. Adversity requires solidarity and empathy.

The six Niños Héroes are Juan de la Barrera, Juan Escutia, Agustín Melgar, Vicente Suárez, Fernando Montes de Oca, and Francisco Márquez.

Juan de la Barrera was born in 1828. He enlisted at 12. Francisco Márquez was the youngest. He was born in 1834. He applied to the Academy in 1847. He was just 13. Juan Escutia was born between 1828 and 1832. He joined the Academy in 1847.
