Monumento a la Virgen

Towering over the crystal-clear waters of the Bay of Cartagena, a white figure stands sentinel, guardian of the city’s maritime soul. This is the Monumento a la Virgen, a symbol of faith and devotion, a testament to the resilience of the people of Cartagena and their deep connection to the sea. This majestic statue was sculpted by Italian artist Luisi Heredi in the 1950s. Originally towering over 15 meters tall, the marble statue was scaled down and transported to Cartagena in pieces, arriving in 1983. In 2015, a devastating storm struck the city, leaving the Monumento a la Virgen shattered and sinking to the seabed. The community came together, with divers from the Colombian Navy recovering the broken pieces of the statue. The city entrusted local artist Carlos Enrique Rodríguez Arango with the restoration, and through painstaking work, he brought the Monumento a la Virgen back to life, using traditional Renaissance techniques. The repaired statue was reinstated in 2016, a symbol of hope and a powerful reminder of the city’s resilient spirit. Today, the Monumento a la Virgen continues to be a landmark, a source of inspiration for Cartageneros, and a symbol of the deep bond between the city and the sea. Standing here on the bay, it’s easy to imagine the Monumento a la Virgen watching over the ships that sail in and out of the harbor, a symbol that beckons travelers with its tale of faith and renewal.
