Sculpted by José Villa Soberón and designed by Rómulo Fernández Villoldo this monument is a powerful visual statement. A cuboid base expands into two distinct forms reaching towards the sky. Fifteen tonnes of steel and marble create a powerful presence. The Cuban flag’s star proudly adorns the top.
The front reveals a relief of José Martí’s bust his gaze seemingly fixed on the future. Inscriptions on the sides speak volumes. One side reads “Madrid to José Martí (1853-1895) National Hero of Cuba”. The other bears a quote from Martí himself a call for “triumphant love with all and for the good of all”.
Unveiled in October 1986 the inauguration was attended by Madrid’s mayor and Cuba’s Minister of Culture. It sits in Plaza de Quito a serene area near Paseo de la Habana. Two fountains pines cypresses and trees surround it creating a peaceful atmosphere.
