Donated by Feliciano Barrera this is the Monumento a Galicia. It stands proudly in Madrid’s Plaza de Galicia a testament to Galician heritage. This magnificent cruceiro isn’t just a sculpture it’s a story. A story of Galician artistry and generosity. Eduardo Parrado Conde a Compostela sculptor crafted it in 1980. He drew inspiration from Romanesque art. The style reflects traditional Galician artistic forms. Parrado’s work is original not a mere copy. He created many cruceiros throughout Spain. This particular cruceiro is special though. It sits atop a paved mound. Originally the mound was covered in vegetation. Four shields representing Galicia’s provinces surround the base. They form a cross symbolizing the region’s unity. Notice the artificial stone platform nearby. It’s shaped like a scallop shell a symbol of Santiago. Five benches surround it each displaying Galician and Madrid’s coats of arms. The cruceiro itself is quite simple. Christ is depicted with arms and legs outstretched. The pillar is square. The capital is Romanesque in style. It serves as the visual centerpiece of the plaza. Made of artificial and limestone this remarkable monument showcases Galicia’s rich culture in the heart of Madrid. The Monumento a Galicia a gift of unity and artistic expression. It continues to bring together two distinct regions. It shows the enduring spirit of Galicia. The Monumento a Galicia is more than just stone. It is a symbol. A symbol of cultural exchange.
