Doesn’t this statue of Dom João VI exude power? The Monumento a Dom João VI Sculpture stands here as a testament to a king. It also marks a pivotal moment in Portuguese and Brazilian history.

This isn’t just any statue. The Monumento a Dom João VI Sculpture is a replica. The original graces Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It was gifted to the city on its 4th centenary.

Dom João VI ruled during turbulent times. France invaded Portugal in 1807. He moved the Portuguese royal family to Brazil, aided by Britain. Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the Portuguese Empire.

The king’s arrival transformed Rio. New institutions arose. These included the Royal Military Academy. Also the Bank of Brazil and the Royal Library. Rio became a “New Lisbon”.

But Portugal wanted Dom João back. He returned in 1821 after 13 years in Rio. He left his son, Dom Pedro, as Prince Regent of Brazil. Dom João ruled in Lisbon for five more years. He died in 1826.

The statue in Rio was inaugurated in 1965. It was a gift from Portugal. Salvador Carvão da Silva d’Eça Barata Feyo sculpted it. It portrays Dom João on horseback.

Equestrian statues traditionally honor heroes. They depict emperors, kings, and military leaders. The horse is said to be a Portuguese Alter-Real. It ascends a ramp to enhance its stature.

Dom João holds an orb in his right hand. This orb symbolizes Christ’s sovereignty over the world. The statue faces Guanabara Bay. Here Dom João and his court arrived in 1808.

This replica in Porto was installed in 2012. It allows us to reflect on Dom João’s legacy. The Monumento a Dom João VI Sculpture connects Porto to a broader history. It links Portugal and Brazil. It embodies a shared heritage across the Atlantic.
