Brave. That’s the word that comes to mind standing before the Monumento a Bomberos statue. It stands as a testament to the courage of Arequipa’s firefighters. Their history is woven into the very fabric of this city.

The Monumento a Bomberos isn’t just a statue. It’s a symbol. It represents the unwavering dedication of the men and women who risked their lives to protect Arequipa. Their story began in the aftermath of devastating fires. In 1911 a blaze raged for twenty hours. Soldiers and townspeople battled the flames with buckets. They could not control the inferno.

Two more significant fires followed. One in 1913 at the Porcella company. Another that same year at the home of Guillermo Brain and Felix Caballero. It was this last fire that sparked a change. Guillermo Crosby a descendant of firefighters from Lima saw the need for a formal fire company. He along with Guillermo Brain and Tim Smith both experienced firefighters from Iquique and Mollendo rallied the citizens of Arequipa.

On August 22 1914 the Compania de Bomberos Voluntarios Arequipa No 1 was founded. Eighty-five citizens signed the founding document. Their first station was a rented space near the Beneficencia Publica. They started with limited equipment. A steam pump from Lima a few ladders and buckets donated by the community. The early years were challenging. Their initial steam-powered pumps were too heavy for horses to pull. The firefighters often carried them themselves. Later two Ford Model T trucks were modified to haul the equipment.

Luis Kaemena Weiss served as Commander for an impressive 38 years 1934-1972. His name is synonymous with the bravery and strength of Arequipa’s firefighters. He led his team through the devastating earthquake of 1960. The firefighters rescued people from collapsed buildings. They extinguished fires caused by short circuits. They even distributed drinking water in affected areas.

The Monumento a Bomberos is a tribute to Commander Kaemena and all the firefighters who followed him. It represents their unwavering commitment to the city. They risked their lives. They worked tirelessly. They showed the true spirit of Arequipa. This statue serves as a reminder of their sacrifice and their dedication. Their selfless service deserves our lasting respect and gratitude.
