Meow. Have you ever seen a cat made of bricks? Right here in Detroit stands the Monumental Kitty a truly unique feline.

This isn’t your average housecat. Monumental Kitty is a public artwork created by local artist Jerome Ferretti. He’s a talented artist who used to be a bricklayer. He used his skills to bring this amazing cat to life.

The kitty was built in 2010. It sits near the I-75 freeway. The cat was meant to cheer up a boring spot in Corktown. Local people raised money to make it happen. They loved the idea of a brick kitty brightening their neighborhood.

The Monumental Kitty wasn’t just any cat. It had a large dome-shaped head wide eyes and pointy ears. A tail and paw completed the design. Even the claws were made of stone. People loved to stand on its head for photos. It was a fun quirky landmark.

Sadly in April 2019 most of the Monumental Kitty was destroyed. Vandals damaged the sculpture leaving just the paw and tail. But don’t worry. The artist and the community are working to bring it back. The kitty’s head parts are being safely stored. They plan to restore the kitty to its former glory.

The Monumental Kitty represents Detroit’s fighting spirit. It’s a symbol of community involvement. Even after destruction the community’s commitment to rebuilding the kitty shows their resilience. It’s a testament to the city’s love for public art. It’s a reminder that even in a city of cars this unique cat holds a special place in the hearts of Detroiters. They plan to restore it to its full glory someday soon. We can’t wait to see the Monumental Kitty once again standing tall.
