Beneath our feet lies more than just Tiananmen Square. It is the heart of China and the foundation of a nation’s memory. We are standing before the Monument to the People’s Heroes. This monument honors those who sacrificed everything for China’s freedom.

The Monument to the People’s Heroes stands tall as a ten-story obelisk. Its construction spanned from 1952 to 1958. Liang Sicheng designed this national monument with his wife, Lin Huiyin. Chen Zhide was also instrumental in realizing the final product.

Look closely. The Monument to the People’s Heroes is nearly 38 meters high. It faces north. The base features intricate reliefs that tell stories. These aren’t just decorations. They depict key moments in China’s revolutionary history.

The reliefs on the Monument to the People’s Heroes start with the destruction of opium at Humen in 1839. This pivotal event ignited the First Opium War. The Jintian Uprising of 1851 is next. It fueled the Taiping Revolution. Then there is the Wuchang Uprising. This led to the Xinhai Revolution in 1911.

Notice the May Fourth Movement of 1919 depicted. A young man demands national sovereignty before a crowd. The May 30th Movement of 1925 shows workers fighting their way to the British Concession in Shanghai. The Nanchang Uprising against the Kuomintang is also represented. It shows a company commander signaling an attack.

“Guerrilla War Against the Japanese Invasion” depicts guerrillas in action. The final relief is the “Yangtze River Crossing Campaign.” This shows the People’s Liberation Army advancing towards Nanjing.

The stone for the Monument to the People’s Heroes came from Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao. Mao Zedong wrote “Eternal glory to the people’s heroes” on the front. Zhou Enlai wrote an inscription for the back.

Consider the monument’s inscription. It honors heroes who fought since the 1840s. This encompasses China’s struggle against imperialism and for revolution.

Since its completion, the Monument to the People’s Heroes has undergone several repairs. In 1961, it was listed as a major cultural heritage site. Foreign dignitaries often lay wreaths here.

The Monument to the People’s Heroes is protected by law. This ensures its preservation as a symbol of Chinese spirit. It commemorates the fight for national independence, freedom, and prosperity.

As you stand here at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, remember the weight of history. Feel the dedication of those who fought for a new China. Let this monument be a reminder of their sacrifices. Their legacy continues to shape the nation today.
