In a city teeming with life, the Monument to the Loyal Dead stands as a solemn reminder. The Monument to the Loyal Dead is more than just a structure. It’s a poignant tribute to the courageous South Korean soldiers who fought valiantly during the Korean War. This memorial, established in 1994, commemorates about 1,100 officers and men from the South Korean First Division. These brave soldiers, from the 11th, 12th, and 15th regiments, made their last stand on Gaehwasan Mountain. Their heroic defense lasted from June 26th to 30th, 1950. They faced a much larger North Korean force disguised as South Korean soldiers. Sadly, their communication and supplies were cut off. The entire South Korean force perished in the valley surrounding Gaehwasan Mountain. The Monument to the Loyal Dead serves as a powerful symbol of their sacrifice. Every year on June 28th, a memorial service is held at the monument. This service honors the memory of those who gave their lives for their country. The monument itself stands 4.7 meters high. It was built by the First Division of the ROK Army and Mitasa Temple. The Monument to the Loyal Dead offers a quiet place for reflection. It’s a space to remember the cost of freedom and the dedication of those who fought to protect it.
