Aurel Constantin Popovici, born in 1863 in present-day Romania, was a lawyer, politician, and journalist. He dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of Romanians within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He even co-signed the Transylvanian Memorandum in 1892, a bold move demanding equal rights and an end to oppressive Magyarization policies. But Popovici wasn’t simply a nationalist. He saw the potential for a stronger, more inclusive empire. In 1906, he published a book proposing a radical idea: the federalization of Austria-Hungary into the “United States of Greater Austria.” He argued that by granting autonomy to the various ethnic groups within the empire, it could become a more stable and prosperous entity. His vision, sadly, never came to fruition. With the rising tide of nationalism and the outbreak of World War I, the empire crumbled. Popovici, finding himself at odds with the changing political landscape, sought refuge in neutral Switzerland. He died here in Geneva in 1917, his dream of a united, federalized empire unrealized.
