Across the boulevard, the Monument Maurice Maeterlinck Plaque beckons us. It whispers tales of a literary giant. The Monument Maurice Maeterlinck Plaque commemorates the life and work of Maurice Maeterlinck, a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. Maeterlinck’s connection to this place is profound. His opulent residence, once known as Villa Orlamonde and later Palais Maeterlinck, stood proudly on Boulevard Maurice-Maeterlinck. The villa, a neo-classical masterpiece of Florentine inspiration, boasted breathtaking views of the Baie des Anges. Maeterlinck purchased the expansive property in 1930. He transformed it into a haven for social gatherings, hosting luminaries like Charlie Chaplin and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. During World War II, the Maeterlincks sought refuge in the United States. Their beloved villa fell victim to vandalism and looting. Upon their return in 1947, they found solace amidst the ruins. Maeterlinck breathed his last in this very spot in 1949. His ashes, along with those of his wife, Renée Dahon, rest in a stele near the former villa. Today, the Palais Maeterlinck has been transformed into luxury apartments. However, the Monument Maurice Maeterlinck Plaque serves as a poignant reminder. It recalls a time when literary brilliance and artistic spirit filled these grounds. The plaque stands as a testament to Maeterlinck’s enduring legacy. It connects us to the rich history of this captivating place.
