On March 23, 1881, the Nice Opera House was a scene of excitement and anticipation. A performance of “Lucia di Lammermoor” was about to begin. But within moments, a gas leak ignited a devastating fire. The flames spread rapidly through the building. Panic ensued as terrified audience members tried to escape. Tragically, more than sixty people lost their lives in the inferno. The Monument aux morts de l’incendie de l’opéra stands as a somber reminder of this catastrophe.
