Founded in 1972 by Reverend and Mrs Jonathan Kaan the Montreal Chinese Alliance Church began humbly. A small group of Chinese families and students from Hong Kong Taiwan and Malaysia gathered for worship. Initially they met in a borrowed Lutheran church. Later they convened in a converted garage on Pine Avenue.
This wasn’t just any garage. It was a testament to their faith a small space filled with hope and the promise of community. Imagine the sounds of hymns echoing in that converted garage. Picture the warmth of fellowship despite the modest setting.
By 1982 the congregation had outgrown its temporary home. They moved to a new building on Marie-Anne Street. This marked a significant milestone for the Montreal Chinese Alliance Church. It represented growth and stability. It was a space to nurture their spiritual lives and build stronger bonds.
Growth continued. By 1988 the church was bursting at the seams. An influx of Chinese immigrants fueled this expansion. The solution A daughter church was established. The Montreal Chinese Alliance Grace Church was born. It primarily catered to Mandarin speakers.
The Grace Church initially held services in rented buildings. In 1992 however it found a permanent home. It returned to the Marie-Anne Street location. The mother church meanwhile moved to a larger building better suited to its expanding needs. This wasn’t just a relocation. It marked a strengthening of the broader Montreal Chinese Alliance Church community.
The Montreal Chinese Alliance Grace Church reflects the evolving Chinese community in Montreal. It adapted to changing linguistic and cultural needs. Today it offers services and Sunday school classes in Mandarin Cantonese English and French. The English and French congregations embrace people of all backgrounds.
