Can you imagine the echoes of ancient footsteps right here in Montescudo? This frazione was once a comune in the Province of Rimini. It is nestled in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Montescudo is steeped in history. It offers breathtaking views.

Montescudo likely earned its name from the Italian words “monte” meaning mountain and “scudo” meaning shield. Thus its name means shield mountain. Its story stretches back to Etruscan times. Montescudo served as a vital station for Rome’s military mail. This linked Rimini to Rome. Emperor Otto I conquered it in 1209. The Republic of Venice later held sway.

The Middle Ages saw fierce battles. The House of Malatesta of Rimini clashed with the Dukes of Urbino for control. The Republic of Venice ceded Montescudo to the Papal States in 1509. Montescudo briefly served as a district capital during the Cisalpine and Italian Republics. However, the Papal States restored Coriano’s status in 1805.

World War II left its mark. The town suffered near-total destruction during fighting on the Gothic Line. Allied soldiers found their first resting place here. They were later moved to the Coriano Ridge War Cemetery.

Montescudo joined the Valconca Union in 1996. This was an effort to integrate public services across several municipalities. However, a merger clause was repealed in 2009. Montescudo merged with Monte Colombo in 2016. Together they formed Montescudo-Monte Colombo.
