The British Indian 4th Division, including brave Gurkha soldiers, fought tirelessly against the entrenched German 278th Infantry Division. The fight for Monte Pulito was part of a larger struggle on the Gothic Line. It represented a critical point in the Allied advance through Italy. One story from the battle echoes through history. Sher Bahadur Thapa, a Gurkha soldier, displayed extraordinary courage on these slopes. He sacrificed himself to protect his comrades, his bravery earning him a posthumous Victoria Cross, the highest military honor in the British Commonwealth.
