Hidden behind CarParc Diem garage, the Montclair District Energy Plant hums with power. It’s not just a building. It’s the heart of Montclair State University. This plant isn’t a relic of the past. It’s a modern marvel completed in 2013, replacing an older plant from the 1940s. The Montclair District Energy Plant is a combined heating, cooling, and power (CHCP) facility. It’s a testament to innovation and efficiency. The plant tirelessly generates around 75% of the university’s electricity annually. It also supplies steam for heat and chilled water for cooling to the entire campus. Think of a network of underground pipes, pulsing with energy, connecting every building like veins and arteries. The Montclair District Energy Plant doesn’t just power lights and computers. It keeps the campus comfortable year-round, warming classrooms in winter and cooling labs in summer. This continuous operation ensures a reliable energy supply, generating approximately 5.4 megawatts of power. But the Montclair District Energy Plant’s story doesn’t end here. It’s part of a larger commitment to sustainability. The university purchases the remaining 25% of its electricity from PSE&G and supplements that with renewable energy credits. These credits offset the university’s carbon footprint and support green energy initiatives. Moreover, after a power outage in 2016, the university installed a microgrid. This system allows the Montclair District Energy Plant to disconnect from the main grid and operate independently during emergencies. This makes Montclair State one of the few universities with this level of energy resilience. The Montclair District Energy Plant stands as a symbol of Montclair State University’s forward-thinking approach to energy.
