The Montana Branch Santa Monica Public Library started small. It first opened as a storefront library in February 1952. The address was 1528-30 Montana Avenue. Imagine a cozy space filled with eager readers.

After seven years, the library needed more space. A new facility was built at its current location. Weldon Fulton designed it. He also designed the Fairview Branch. The Montana Branch opened with fanfare on March 1 1960.

In 2002, major renovations took place. These renovations added a community room. The renovations were part of a system-wide upgrade. Santa Monica voters partially funded the upgrade. The Montana Branch benefitted from interior improvements in 2012. The current building size is 7517 square feet.

Today the Montana Branch Santa Monica Public Library offers much to the community. You can browse collections and pick up holds. Use computers for up to 60 minutes. Check out materials. Wi-Fi is available.

The Montana Branch Santa Monica Public Library also offers self-service hours. These are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. You will need pre-authorization. It involves swiping your Santa Monica Public Library card.

Full-service hours are also available. These are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. On Saturdays, full service is available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
