Monsignor Kett Playground is located in Inwood. It stands as a vital open space for residents. The City has made a significant reinvestment in this playground.
Let’s take a quick journey back in time. In 1948, the City of New York acquired this land. The plan was to build the Dyckman Houses public housing project. But a portion was set aside. It was intended for a playground to serve the residents.
In 1949, the Dyckman Houses Playground opened. In 1986, it was shortened to Dyckman Playground. It featured play equipment and sports courts. There was also a park house with a circular roof.
Fast forward to 1995. An extensive rehabilitation added basketball courts and benches. Swing sets and a seal sculpture were also added. Colorful play equipment completed the renovation. The park house was also renovated.
Then, in 1997, a meaningful change occurred. The playground was named for Monsignor Francis J. Kett. He was the pastor of Saint Jude’s Roman Catholic Church. Monsignor Kett had a profound impact on the community.
