Gazing at the shimmering waters of Mongchon Lake, can you imagine this serene landscape was once a vital defensive moat for an ancient fortress? Mongchon Lake, nestled within Seoul’s Olympic Park, has a fascinating history intertwined with the Baekje Kingdom. This lake wasn’t always here. It was formed when the Seongnaecheon Stream, the original natural moat of Mongchon Toseong, was reshaped during the park’s construction for the 1988 Olympics. Mongchon Toseong, the earthen fortress, stands as a testament to the Baekje era. It was built using layers of clayish soil and sand, incorporating a natural hill. This fortress, along with Pungnap Toseong, marked the boundaries of Hanseong Baekje’s royal capital. Mongchon Lake now occupies the space where the original moat once protected the fortress. Archaeological surveys conducted at Mongchon Toseong have unearthed a trove of Baekje artifacts. These include cylinder-shaped pottery stands, soft earthenware, and paddling pattern earthenware. Other finds, such as glazed pottery and golden accessories, hint at exchanges with China. Interestingly, remnants of Goguryeo and Silla have also been found. This suggests the fortress served a defensive role for these kingdoms after Baekje’s decline in the 5th century. Many of these remarkable artifacts are now displayed at the Seoul National University Museum and the Seoul Baekje Museum. So, as you enjoy the tranquility of Mongchon Lake, remember the layers of history beneath the surface. It’s a story of kingdoms, fortifications, and a transformation from a strategic moat to a peaceful urban oasis.
