Serene and ancient Mondoyakujin Toko-ji Temple stands before you. Its history whispers secrets. This Buddhist temple nestled in Nishinomiya boasts a rich past. It’s one of Japan’s three Yakujin temples. It enshrines Yakujin Myoo. This deity is said to ward off misfortune.

The temple’s front gate endured the devastating Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It was completely destroyed then rebuilt. Today you can see the inner tower gate. The Yakujindo sub-shrine also stands proudly. Besides Yakujin Myoo other deities are honored here. These include Fudo Myoo Aizen Myoo and Daikokuten. The main object of worship is Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai. Kukai founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism is also venerated.

A unique feature of Mondoyakujin Toko-ji Temple is its spacious grounds. They contain sand from each stop on Shikoku’s 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Representations of the principal objects of worship at each stop are also here. This allows pilgrims to easily replicate their journey.

A fascinating anecdote surrounds the temple’s Yakujin Myoo image. Emperor Saga dreamt of the Yakujin deity. He was at his unlucky age of 41. The Emperor shared his dream with Kukai. Kukai then carved Yakujin images for prayer. These were offered to Kongobuji Temple Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine and Mondoyakujin Temple. Only the image at Mondoyakujin Toko-ji Temple remains.
