Imagine standing at the foot of a grand building rising from the ancient stones of Jerusalem. This is the Monastery of Notre Dame, a haven of peace and spirituality in a city steeped in history. It was founded in 1882 by French Assumptionist pilgrims, who saw a need for a place to welcome fellow pilgrims and guide them on their journey. The site was chosen next to the Old City walls, just outside the Christian Quarter. The Monastery was built with donations and the cornerstone was laid in 1885. It took until 1904 to complete the guesthouse and to mark the occasion a large statue of the Virgin Mary was placed above the entrance. The Monastery of Notre Dame served as a seminary for future Assumptionists until the First World War. It suffered damage during the Israeli-Arab conflict of 1948, but was restored to its former glory in 1978 and became a Pontifical Institute and ecumenical holy place. This building has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. Imagine the stories its stones could tell, the prayers whispered within its walls, and the tears and joys shared by the pilgrims who found refuge here. Today, the Monastery of Notre Dame stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to faith, and a reminder of the enduring power of prayer. It’s a place to connect with something ancient, something transcendent, something that whispers of a peace that goes beyond all understanding. Isn’t that something to ponder as you stand here in Jerusalem, at the foot of the Monastery of Notre Dame?
