“Parks Make Life Better.” This is the motto of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. And Mona Park embodies this perfectly.
Mona Park is located in South Los Angeles. This 7.9-acre park provides a serene escape from the city. Imagine it: lush greenery, well-maintained trails and a peaceful ambiance.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation manages Mona Park. This department has a long and proud history of serving the community. Before 1944, two divisions managed parks. The Parks Division maintained the physical aspects. The Department of Recreation administered the programs. In 1944, they merged forming the current department.
Today, the Department owns 182 parks. These include natural areas, wildlife sanctuaries and regional parks. They also operate the largest municipal golf system. Plus, they manage cultural venues like the Hollywood Bowl.
Mona Park is more than just a green space. It is a recreational hub. In November 2011, Mona Park received a Dodger Dreamfield. Former Dodger owner Frank McCourt dedicated it. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas partnered with LA84 and the Dodger Dream Foundation. The field includes solar scoreboards and a sprinkler system.
Year-round programs are available here. These include youth sports. There is also a summer lunch program. Plus, you can get after-school snacks. After-school day camp programs are available, too.
Mona Park also features a gymnasium. And, it has a swimming pool. The pool is open daily during the summer. The County recruits lifeguards every summer. Lifeguards must be 16 years old. They earn competitive pay. It ranges from $23.87 to $25.87 per hour after certification.
Potential lifeguards must pass a swim examination. It is a 300-yard swim. It must be completed in six minutes and 30 seconds. Training starts in April.
Mona Park offers something for everyone. You can walk, run, or hike. The trails cater to all fitness levels. Los Angeles enjoys a mild climate. This makes outdoor activities enjoyable year-round. The best seasons for walking are spring and fall. The weather is milder then.
You might encounter birds, squirrels, and rabbits here. Remember to respect the wildlife. Avoid feeding them. In the summer, prepare for warm weather. Stay hydrated and use sun protection. In the winter, expect mild and sometimes wet conditions.
Mona Park is an urban oasis. It provides a picturesque backdrop for fitness and exploration. It is a place where you can immerse yourself in nature. It is a place where “Parks Make Life Better.”
