Tucked away in the Fushimi ward of Kyoto, Momoyamacho-Mikawa whispers tales of a bygone era. Momoyamacho-Mikawa’s very name echoes the grandeur of Fushimi Castle, built by the powerful Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Momoyama period, spanning from 1573 to 1603, takes its name from this very spot. “Momoyama” translates to “Peach Hill,” a testament to the abundant peach trees that once graced the hillside. Imagine the breathtaking spectacle of millions of peach blossoms, painting the mountains and fields in delicate hues. Hideyoshi’s Fushimi Castle served as a symbol of a newly unified Japan. Momoyamacho-Mikawa flourished as part of this vibrant castle town, a bustling hub teeming with tens of thousands of people. It was one of Japan’s largest cities, rivaling Edo, Osaka, and Sakai in size and importance. The area thrived as a vital transportation center, connecting land and water routes to Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. Today, a replica of Fushimi Castle stands as a reminder of this golden age, a concrete sentinel overlooking the Momoyama Castle Sports Park. Though the interior remains closed, the surrounding gardens offer a tranquil space to reflect on the past. Close by lies the final resting place of Emperor Meiji, a solemn reminder of the passage of time and the enduring spirit of Momoyamacho-Mikawa.
