Did you ever hear of a town where the main square doubles as a parade ground? High in the mountains of northeastern Colombia, lies Molagavita. This charming town in the Santander Department is nestled amidst breathtaking scenery. Molagavita is nicknamed “Mola” and its motto is “inspirational”. It truly lives up to its name. Molagavita extends its charm across the García Rovira province. The town is just 30 kilometers from Málaga and 130 from Bucaramanga. Imagine traveling from Málaga to Molagavita on a bumpy, unpaved road. The journey takes about two hours in a “bus mixto,” a colorful local transport. You’ll be greeted by friendly locals and treated to “Lokiños,” a sweet treat. The vibrant green landscapes and clear skies make the journey a feast for the eyes. From a hilltop viewpoint at kilometer 13, you can spot the towns of Málaga, Enciso, Miranda, and even San Miguel. Molagavita has a unique charm. The main square is surprisingly sloped. This unusual incline serves as a natural grandstand during the town’s vibrant San Pedro and San Pablo festivities. The sloped square transforms into a perfect viewing platform for the lively parades and floats. The heart of Molagavita boasts the town’s two most prominent structures. Facing each other across the main square are the church and the Alcaldía (town hall). The church’s single elegant tower and its beautiful stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes are worth admiring. Molagavita has another claim to fame: it’s the birthplace of renowned composer, guitarist, and “tiplista” Luis María Carvajal Prada. You can find his bust in the central park. Carvajal Prada composed the anthem of the National Police. He also wrote the popular melody “Viva la Fiesta.” Tragically, he died of a heart attack in 1960 just as he was about to conduct an orchestra performance. Every year, Molagavita hosts a folk dance and music competition in his honor. Molagavita is not only a town of scenic beauty, but also a hub for agriculture. The region is known for cultivating a unique Colombian goat breed, well-suited to the rugged terrain of the Chicamocha Canyon. Local goat farmers even offer tent accommodations. Visitors can experience an immersive stay, enjoy the stunning views of the Chicamocha River, and savor the taste of locally grown melon and avocado.
