Journey back to the Joseon period. Mok 5-dong was not the bustling neighborhood you see today. It was a tranquil ranch, a landscape dotted with trees where horses grazed peacefully. The name “Mok,” meaning “tree” in Korean, echoes this pastoral history. Mok 5-dong, part of Seoul’s Yangcheon District, retains a touch of its serene past, even amidst the modern cityscape. Mok 5-dong is one of five distinct neighborhoods within Mok-dong, each contributing to the area’s unique character. Mok-dong itself underwent a dramatic transformation in the 1980s. Once one of Seoul’s most affordable areas, its proximity to the polluted Anyangcheon river, frequent flooding, and noisy unauthorized factories kept property values low. But the approach of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics spurred the military government to develop Mok-dong into a high-density residential area. This development aimed to address Seoul’s growing housing needs and create a presentable route from the airport to the Olympic stadiums. This rapid transformation sparked protests from original residents, who demanded fair compensation for their relocation. This struggle contributed to the recognition of “the right to live” in South Korea, a significant milestone in the country’s social and political landscape. Today, Mok-dong, including Mok 5-dong, stands as a testament to this tumultuous history. The area is now renowned for its excellent schools, both public and private, earning it the nickname “special education district.” The towering Hyperion Towers, with Tower A reaching 69 stories, dominate the skyline. These structures serve as a constant reminder of Mok-dong’s journey from a humble horse ranch to a modern urban center. Mok 5-dong shares its district with major broadcasting corporations like SBS and CBS, further solidifying Mok-dong’s significant role in contemporary Korean culture.
