Ever wonder about the story behind this place called Mok 4-dong? Mok 4-dong is a neighborhood in Seoul within the larger Yangcheon District. It’s part of a bigger area known as Mok-dong. Let’s dive into what makes Mok-dong special.

Mok-dong is often called a special education district. This is because it has many private institutions known as Hagwons. It also boasts high-quality public schools. Families here value education. Many upper-middle to upper-class families reside in Mok-dong.

Mok-dong is also home to broadcasting giants. The headquarters of SBS and CBS are located here. SBS is the Seoul Broadcasting System. CBS is the Christian Broadcasting System. These media companies play a big role in South Korean broadcasting.

Look up and you will see the Hyperion Towers. The tallest of these towers has 69 stories. That’s about 256 meters high. Tower A is one of the tallest residential buildings in the world. It’s also the fifth tallest skyscraper in Seoul.

Mok-dong has a rich history. During the Joseon period, this area was a ranch. Horses grazed here among many trees. Over time, it transformed into a wooden area.

However, in the 1980s, Mok-dong was among the cheapest residential areas in Seoul. The Anyangcheon river was polluted. There was a risk of heavy flooding. Unauthorized factories created a lot of noise.

Things changed in 1983. Development plans were decided for the region. The military government developed Mok-dong as a high-density residential area. This was ahead of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics. The goal was to meet growing housing demands in Seoul. It also filled a void on the way from the airport to the stadiums.

The development wasn’t without challenges. Original residents protested low relocation compensation. They were initially offered only 100,000 won. These protests led to the recognition of the right to live in the country.

Today Mok-dong is a thriving area within Yangcheon District. Yangcheon District sits on the southwest side of the Han River. Mok-dong is at its center.

The district has several sights to see. Mokdong Stadium hosted Olympic Games events in 1988. The baseball stadium hosts many games for juniors. Since 2008, it has been used for amateur and professional baseball games.

Below the Hyperion Towers you will find a large Hyundai department store.

Mok-dong has several neighborhoods. These include Mok 1-dong, Mok 2-dong, Mok 3-dong, Mok 4-dong, and Mok 5-dong.

Mok 4-dong along with the rest of Mok-dong has transformed from agricultural land to a modern residential and commercial hub. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s rapid development and the changing needs of its people.
