Imagine living in a district that transformed from farmland to a modern hub in a few decades. That’s Mok 2 Dong for you. This is the Mok 2 Dong Community Service Center. It stands as a testament to the area’s dynamic history.
Mok-dong, including Mok 2 Dong, was once an agricultural area. It was known for horse breeding. Fast forward to the 1980s. This area was one of the cheapest residential spots in Seoul. Pollution from the Anyangcheon river was a major issue. There was also the risk of flooding and noise from unauthorized factories.
However, things changed rapidly. In 1983, development plans were set in motion. The military government developed the region into a high-density residential area. This was ahead of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics. The goal was to meet the growing housing demands in Seoul. It also aimed to fill the space between the airport and the stadiums.
This rapid development wasn’t without challenges. Original residents protested against low compensation for relocation. They fought for their right to live. Their struggle led to significant changes in how development projects considered residents’ rights.
Mok-dong is now known for its educational environment. It is home to many private institutions called Hagwons. Quality public schools are another draw. The area is also home to broadcasting corporations like SBS and CBS.
Mok 2 Dong itself has a significant population. In 2020, it had over 29,000 residents. The community is diverse with a mix of age groups.
The Anyangcheon stream flows near Mok-dong. It starts from Anyang temple in the Samseong mountain. It merges with other streams and eventually flows into the Han River. Efforts have been made to improve the stream’s condition.
Yongwangsan Park is another key feature. Selected as Mokdong’s first park in 1971, it was developed into a city park in 1989. It provides walking courses, pavilions, and activity facilities for residents.
The Mok 2 Dong Community Service Center plays a vital role. It supports local residents with administrative tasks. It strengthens community bonds through various programs. It represents the heart of a neighborhood that has transformed dramatically over time.
