Hidden behind tall walls near Siri Fort Auditorium stands the Mohammadi Masjid. This unassuming mosque holds a rich history. It’s a testament to Delhi’s layered past a place where modern events and ancient echoes intertwine.

Built around the 15th century during the Lodhi rule (1451-1526 AD) the Mohammadi Masjid boasts a classic three-bay design. A single dome sits atop an octagonal drum above the central bay. Its east-facing facade originally featured three arched entrances adorned with blue tiles. Sadly much of that original beauty is lost to time.

Step inside and gaze upward. The ceiling is a masterpiece. Maroon lines and a calligraphic central design are incised into the plaster. The rest of the interior is simpler perhaps stripped of its former glory. Yet intricate incised plaster medallions remain. They bear Quranic verses. A stairway on the south side leads to the roof.

The Mohammadi Masjid’s story isn’t just about architecture. It’s also a story of survival. The mosque stands near the remnants of Siri Fort’s walls. These walls survived extensive demolitions during the 1982 Asian Games. Imagine the transformation the area must have undergone. The Mohammadi Masjid itself was even used as a fodder store until 1924. The Archaeological Survey of India eventually cleared and preserved this historical site.

Today the Mohammadi Masjid rests within a peaceful park. A stark contrast to the bustling city surrounding it. Its tranquil setting offers a unique opportunity for reflection. A chance to connect with Delhi’s vibrant history in a serene and unexpected oasis. The Mohammadi Masjid is more than just a mosque. It is a silent observer a testament to Delhi’s resilience and a poignant reminder of the past. A peaceful haven in the heart of a busy city.
