The story of Medina begins long before Islam. Previously known as Yathrib, Medina’s history stretches back to the 6th century. Jewish settlers arrived after conflict with the Romans.
In 622 CE everything changed. Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina. This event, the Hijrah, marks the start of the Muslim calendar. Medina transformed into the administrative heart of the expanding Islamic state. The Prophet lived here until his death in 632 A.D.

Masjid Quba is also very important. The Prophet Muhammad said that whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the Quba Mosque and prays in it, he will have a reward like the Umrah pilgrimage.
Medina is not just about mosques. It’s a place of deep spirituality. Muslims believe prayers in Medina are especially blessed. Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet said, “A prayer in this mosque of mine is a thousand times greater than a prayer in other than it, except for the Masjid al-Haram.”
