Once a bustling hub, now a serene escape. That’s Mochuan. Mochuan is a small township near Guilin. It remains relatively unknown to the outside world. Yet, Mochuan preserves centuries-old buildings and a rich history.

Around 500 years ago, Mochuan thrived as a major town. It connected five neighboring counties. These counties linked to surrounding provinces like Hunan and Jiangxi. Mochuan was a vital center for trade and transportation. Two official roads and four pebble-paved paths served pedestrians and horses. These paths were about 70 to 80 centimeters wide.

Today, Mochuan offers a retreat from the crowded tourist spots of Guilin. It is ideal for backpackers seeking authentic scenery. A side trip to Mochuan reveals a different side of China. Mochuan lies 30 kilometers from downtown Xing’an. The drive from Xing’an to Mochuan is charming. It follows a calm river with stunning views. Oddly-shaped mountains and colorful riverbanks line the route. Locals take this beauty for granted. They proudly recall Mochuan’s past as a trade hub.

Let’s turn our attention to a stone bridge not far from here. Erected in 1887, the bridge stands 12 meters tall. It is 22 meters long and 5.5 meters wide. A single arch spans 18.6 meters. This is Hualong Bridge. While it may seem small, it testifies to Mochuan’s busy past. Occasional vehicles cross it to nearby villages. The bridge is an aesthetic marvel.

Hualong Bridge facilitated transportation. It also served as a social space. A chessboard is carved into a railing slab. This reminds us that people lingered here. They were not always in a hurry.

Today, visitors come to Hualong Bridge to take photos. In the dry season, you can walk onto an islet. From there, capture the bridge towering above.

The Chen family significantly supported the bridge’s construction. They were Mochuan’s wealthiest family. Their residence, a complex in Bangshang village, took 20 years to build. It includes 30 structures and two defense turrets. The Chen household differs from other large homesteads in China. It was built on a slope, creating an unconventional asymmetry. Although somewhat dilapidated, the compound retains elaborate architectural details. Cornices and wood carvings showcase its history.

In 2014, Bangshang Village in Mochuan Town earned recognition. It became one of the Chinese Historical and Cultural Ancient Towns. This highlights Mochuan’s enduring cultural significance.

Mochuan offers a glimpse into China’s past. It is a place where history and natural beauty intertwine. As you explore Mochuan, remember its vibrant past. Picture the bustling trade and the people who shaped this remarkable township.
